At the core of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity (TVCOG) is the makerspace, a community of enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and professionals sharing equipment & expertise. Located in the Quackenbush Building at 30 3rd Street in Troy, NY, the TVCOG has open hours staffed by volunteers. The CEO, Board Members and Volunteers answer visitor questions, give tours, and host many events / classes / workshops. We even rent the space for private functions!


Position Description:

TVCOG Board of Directors and key supporters believe that it is on an exciting trajectory of growth and we are seeking a new Executive Director with the necessary experience and business, financial and analytic acumen to drive the realization of our vision. Experience in, knowledge of, or a clear ability and commitment to network in the funders, partners and the community is critical.

The Board has set aggressive goals for growth in the Capital Region and membership expansion and visibility will be the top priority for the Executive Director and require vigorous leadership. With an emphasis on organizational growth, the Executive Director is responsible for overall operations of TVCOG including marketing/new business development, program design and delivery, fundraising, budget administration, supervision of volunteers, and long-range strategic planning and execution.

Reporting to the Board, the Executive Director will have a close working relationship with TVCOG stakeholders, partners, donors. The ideal candidate must be able to engage TVCOG’s distinct audiences and stakeholder groups which include entrepreneurs, corporations, community, funders, and other partners.

Revenue generation, through fees, memberships, and philanthropic sources, will be a key area of focus and time, and it will be important for the Executive Director to find new and innovative ways to generate additional revenue to deliver events, tools, equipment and to allow TVCOG to reach its sustainability goals. In addition, he/she will have the passion and drive to articulate its value proposition to future partners and constituents.



The Executive Director will be committed to TVCOG’s vision and mission. All candidates will have proven leadership and management skills. Candidates also must have exceptional business development, analytical, and relationship building skills. Additional qualifications include:

  • Masters and Bachelor’s Degree, preferred, and a range of experiences in leadership roles
  • Knowledge  of  the start-ups and makerspace” is  strongly preferred, though not required
  • Experience with operationalizing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
    • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach, manage and develop the volunteer teams, set and achieve strategic objectives and manage a budget
    • Understanding of how to work effectively with a board of directors and ability to cultivate existing and future board member relationships
    • Strong marketing, sales, and public relations experience with the ability to engage stakeholders and build energy around a concept or initiative
    • Exceptional written, and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
    • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative

Salary range- $70,000-$90,000
