  • YWCA JR Ready for Work Program10:00 am - 2:00 pm

    Tech Valley Center of Gravity and YWCA of the Capital Region are joining to pilot a new trades exposure program with the Y's Jamison-Rounds Ready for Work Program. The trades exposure program has grown out of our work with QUESTAR BOCES's STEM Fellowship Program. In this pilot program, nine participants in the Jamison-Rounds program will spend 4 hours per day at CoG for 10 days receiving safety training and gaining hands-on experience in the use of equipment in the following technology zones: 3D printing, laser cutting, woodshop and metal shop. CoG Super User members planning to use equipment during these times may wish to call ahead to ensure availability of a particular machine -- 518-244-3544.

    This is the PERFECT night to come by the Center of Gravity, get a feel for this amazing creative community, and tour our makerspace, coworking facilities and prototyping center. Come learn how you can get access to our 3D printers, laser cutters, fiber arts and electronics equipment, woodshop, welding area and metal shop, in addition to our children's makerspace and STEAM lab, The THINQubator.

  • Fiber Arts / Crafts / Glass Cutting Zone Orientation7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

    The Zone Orientation Series is a sequence of classes designed to introduce new members to key pieces of equipment and training at the Center of Gravity. Members who need a refresher on the topic are also welcome to attend!

    This week's class will be an introduction to the fiber arts / crafts / galss cutting area available at the COG. Focus will be on the sewing machines, loom and embroidery machine, as well as crafting and glass cutting, and will be taught by Irene Purificato, the SRP for that zone.

  • IgniteU Coffee and Companies7:00 am - 9:00 am

    IgniteU welcomes everyone once again to network with our startups, this time over coffee before the work day starts. You met them at the open house, now its time to check up on the startup's progress as we hit the 7 week mark! One week before our Startup Showcase they will be finalizing their pitches and there is no better way to do so than with an early morning networking event. IgniteU will be providing coffee, tea, and other beverages, as well as bagels and additional quick breakfasts.     Bring your own project (sewing, knitting, needlework...or hey, anything portable) and a beverage for a fun evening stitching and sipping in good company. The CoG provides an empty table, well-lit work space and electricity, as well as witty banter and camaraderie. No instructor, craft along with fellow Makers. Free to members, $5 cash fee at check-in for non-members. (Membership has its privileges, join the Center of Gravity to access our awesome equipment, including sewing machines!)

    $5 drop in fee, or free to children of TVCoG members





    Have a child in interested in coding? Already working on his or her own projects? Just getting started with programming? Bring your child and a laptop to Drop-In Kids Coding Nightand work with our volunteer programmers to take their projects to the next level. This unstructured event is open to children of all ages. Parents of participants under age 14 should plan to remain in the Center during the program, and all parents are welcome to learn alongside of their children or take advantage of free wi-fi in our lounge area. If you do not have your own computer, we have a few laptops available for use on a first-come-first-serve basis.




    This event is offered the 1st Thursday of every month. No pre-registration is required.

    Every 1st Saturday children ages 4-12 and their families are invited to join us for a fun, creative hands-on project. Brought to you through the generous support of the Albany Society of Engineers Foundations, these mind-expanding projects help children discover creative play through science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

    This month's project is Electronic Textiles: Use conductive thread, sewable LEDs and batteries to design and make your own light up wrist band

    This project is FREE, but donations are welcome. This is a drop-in program with no pre-registration required.

    If you need any help with your Arduino project, next circuit layout, or any electrical project, bring it by to get some help from fellow CoG Members. Hosted by Konstantin Avdashchenko. If you are planning on attending, please email admin@tvcog.net; registration is not required, but we would like to get a rough estimate of attendees. The $5 drop in fee is for use of TVCOG equipment; if you are planning on just coming in to discuss problems and are not using the equipment, the drop in fee is not required.

    The Tech Valley Game Space (TVGS) Lesson Night is a free monthly lesson on skills useful for game development. These lessons are appropriate for participants of all ages and backgrounds. There is no prior experience required, and no need to feel daunted! Every month, we release a poll at http://www.techvalleygamespace.com/learn/ to determine what the next lesson is going to be.   • Introduction to Enameling6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

    Learn the fundamentals of enamels in this two and a half hour beginner class. The class will cover how to choose enamels and metals, prepare the metal, sift enamel, and fire. At the end of class, you’ll have a one of a kind piece to take home. Materials and use of tools included in the event fee. Taught by Kari Wood.

    $35 for CoG Members| $50 for Non-Members

  • Tech Valley Game Space Game Club7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

    If you enjoy discussing games, come to the Tech Valley Game Space for Game Club! Every month, participants Game Club meeting pick a game to play, then get together and talk about their experiences! Think of this group as being a traditional book club, but with video games instead of your usual hard-covers and paperbacks. Participants discuss various aspects of the game that they liked, disliked, or simply found notable; everything from music, character design, and storytelling, to the in-game physics, level creation, or graphics quality. Anything and everything about the game can be talked about, and no matter one's viewpoint, their input will welcomed and listened to. Anyone can attend - no memberships necessary. So long as you've got the right equipment at home, and enough time and interest to play at least a little of the game, then you're welcome to join in! We will meet in the Board Room and begin the discussion after 7:30 pm.

  • Laser Cutter 101: Make an Illuminated Acrylic Sign1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

    This class is geared towards beginning laser cutter makers or those looking for a refresher. Participants will learn safe laser cutter operation and the basics of designing for the laser cutter and will go home with a battery powered illuminated acrylic sign of their own design.

    Students are encouraged to bring simple art they would like to engrave/cut, but sample shapes and signs will be provided. The registration fee includes all materials (retail value approx. $20).

    This course also qualifies as the required Laser Cutter Safety Orientation.
    $50 CoG Members | $65 Non-Members

  • LittleBits Electronic Club5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

    $5 drop in fee, or free to children of TVCoG members

    This is a drop-in event targeted at kids ages 6-13 who are interested in learning about electronics and circuits. LittleBits are magnetic electronics components that be easily used to build and program inventions with sensors, switches, motors, lights, and sound (like the programmable droid shown in this picture). This is an unstructured event, where participants can decide what they want to build, and create it! No experience necessary. We ask that parents remain in the center during the program, where they can either learn alongside of their children or take advantage of free wi-fi in our lounge area. This will be a recurring monthly event, occurring the 3rd Monday of every month!
