  • The Care and Feeding of 3D Printers1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

    This class will walk through set up, care and maintenance of FDM 3D-printers, the basics of printing, and how to spot and fix common errors. It is perfect for librarians and teachers with 3D printers available to use, and are not quite sure where to start, or how to troubleshoot and maintain them. Topics covered will include: What is 3D Printing? How to Use a 3D Printer Anatomy of an FDM Printer Calibrating a 3D Printer Calibrating a Slicer Common Issues and Maintenance Course fee is $150. TVCOG Members may take a $25 discount and K-12 Educators and Librarians may take a $25 discount. These discounts may be combined where applicable. Email admin@tvcog.net to register. Please include your full name, phone number, and school district in your registration email. Online payment links will be provided to those who have registered. P.O.’s will be accepted.   • Woodshop 102: Make a Clock10:00 am - 1:00 pm


    This foundational class will teach you the basics of the woodshop! The class will introduce the simple machines available in the shop to create a beautiful clock. 

    This will include learning how to safely use the following: 
    Bandsaw
    Miter Saw
    Table Saw
    Belt/Disc Sander

    After a class you can walk away with your very own handmade clock! The registration fee includes all materials. For TVCoG members, this course also qualifies as the required Woodshop Safety Orientation.

    To keep our classes affordable, we book our instructors and purchase materials in advance. We depend on advanced registration. Classes without sufficient advanced enrollment may be canceled. So, please register by the deadline of April 24. 
    For CoG members, this course qualifies as the required safety orientation for the woodshop.

We believe that the key to doing that is empowering all of you to take on a more active role in helping our local game development scene grow and flourish. With that in mind, we want to invite everyone to attend our volunteer coordination meeting. Many of you have been asking how you can get more involved with our group efforts, and this meeting will be a great chance to do just that. We've done so many great things together, and there's no limit to what we can accomplish as long as we remain dedicated to improving. So, let's get organized!

  • Electronics Zone Open Hours6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

    Free for CoG Members | $5 for Non-Members

    If you need any help with your Arduino project, next circuit layout, or any electrical project, bring it by to get some help from fellow CoG Members. Hosted by Konstantin Avdashchenko. If you are planning on attending, please email admin@tvcog.net; registration is not required, but we would like to get a rough estimate of attendees. The $5 drop in fee is for use of TVCOG equipment; if you are planning on just coming in to discuss problems and are not using the equipment, the drop in fee is not required.


    This will be a regularly occurring event, on the second Tuesday of each month. 
    *Note: May has been rescheduled to the first Tuesday of the month due to a scheduling conflict.

  • 3D Printing Zone Orientation7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

    The Zone Orientation Series is a sequence of classes designed to introduce new members to key pieces of equipment and training at the Center of Gravity. Members who need a refresher on the topic are also welcome to attend!

    This week's class will be an introduction to the 3D printers available at the COG. Focus will be on the Makerfront, mBot and Makerbot printers and the software used to prepare models for printing (called slicers).

  • Creative Economy Mixer: The Intersection of Media & Digital Art5:30 pm - 7:30 pm




    On Wednesday, May 2 starting at 5:30pm, join ACE for a Creative Economy mixer at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity (TVCOG), a community of makers, innovators and entrepreneurs driving economic, professional, creative, and personal growth. This is free and open to the public.




    This event will feature a discussion with Karen Helmerson of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) on "The Intersection of Media and Digital Art." During this talk, Karen will share how NYSCA is adapting to the rapidly changing creative and technological landscape.




    Attendees will also enjoy freelancer discussions, demonstrations, and tours of the wide array of equipment and services that TVCOG offers to the region's creatives.

    Join the International Game Developer Association (IGDA) Albany chapter for a free professional talk about game development and/or game industry. The talk will begin at 7pm, but feel free to arrive around 6 and stay until 9 if you'd like to mingle before and after.

  • Kids Drop-In Coding Night5:30 pm - 7:00 pm



    $5 drop in fee, or free to children of TVCoG members





    Have a child in interested in coding? Already working on his or her own projects? Just getting started with programming? Bring your child and a laptop to Drop-In Kids Coding Nightand work with our volunteer programmers to take their projects to the next level. This unstructured event is open to children of all ages. Parents of participants under age 14 should plan to remain in the Center during the program, and all parents are welcome to learn alongside of their children or take advantage of free wi-fi in our lounge area. If you do not have your own computer, we have a few laptops available for use on a first-come-first-serve basis.




    This event is offered the 1st Thursday of every month. No pre-registration is required.

Free to members, $5 cash fee at check-in for non-members. (Membership has its privileges, join the Center of Gravity to access our awesome equipment, including sewing machines!)

  • STEAM-Powered Saturday -- Bridge and House Building10:00 am - 1:00 pm

    Every 1st Saturday children ages 4-12 and their families are invited to join us for a fun, creative hands-on project. Brought to you through the generous support of the Albany Society of Engineers Foundations, these mind-expanding projects help children discover creative play through science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. This month's project is "Bridge and House Building." Use cards and unique laser-cut connectors to build models of bridges and houses. This project is free, but donations are welcome. This month's project is co-hosted by Troy by Design.

    At this meeting, the nominations for officers and directors will be presented. The Nominations Committee will be preparing a slate of recommended candidates. If you are interested in running, or would like to nominate someone as a Director/Officer, please have the candidate fill out this Statement of Intent form. It can be emailed to info@tvcog.net or dropped off at the CoG front desk. Elections will be held on June 5th.

    This week's class will be an introduction to the most commonly used wood shop tools available at the COG.     If you enjoy discussing games, come to the Tech Valley Game Space for Game Club! Every month, participants Game Club meeting pick a game to play, then get together and talk about their experiences! Think of this group as being a traditional book club, but with video games instead of your usual hard-covers and paperbacks. Participants discuss various aspects of the game that they liked, disliked, or simply found notable; everything from music, character design, and storytelling, to the in-game physics, level creation, or graphics quality. Anything and everything about the game can be talked about, and no matter one's viewpoint, their input will welcomed and listened to. Anyone can attend - no memberships necessary. So long as you've got the right equipment at home, and enough time and interest to play at least a little of the game, then you're welcome to join in! We will meet in the Board Room and begin the discussion after 7:30 pm.

  • LittleBits Electronic Club5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

    $5 drop in fee, or free to children of TVCoG members

    This is a drop-in event targeted at kids ages 6-13 who are interested in learning about electronics and circuits. LittleBits are magnetic electronics components that be easily used to build and program inventions with sensors, switches, motors, lights, and sound (like the programmable droid shown in this picture). This is an unstructured event, where participants can decide what they want to build, and create it! No experience necessary. We ask that parents remain in the center during the program, where they can either learn alongside of their children or take advantage of free wi-fi in our lounge area. This will be a recurring monthly event, occurring the 3rd Monday of every month!

    The Zone Orientation Series is a sequence of classes designed to introduce new members to key pieces of equipment and training at the Center of Gravity. Members who need a refresher on the topic are also welcome to attend!

    This week's class will be an introduction to the fiber arts / crafts / galss cutting area available at the COG. Focus will be on the sewing machines, loom and embroidery machine, as well as crafting and glass cutting, and will be taught by Irene Purificato, the SRP for that zone.
