    This is the regular bi-monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity. Regular attendees are the board and officers of the corporation. Members are welcome to observe meetings, but must notify the executive director at info@tvcog.net at least 24 hours in advance if they wish to address the board.

  • Stitch & Sip Open Crafting at the Center of Gravity6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

    Bring your own project (sewing, knitting, needlework...or hey, anything portable) and a beverage for a fun evening stitching and sipping in good company. The CoG provides an empty table, well-lit work space and electricity, as well as witty banter and camaraderie. No instructor, craft along with fellow Makers. Free to members, $5 cash fee at check-in for non-members. (Membership has its privileges, join the Center of Gravity to access our awesome equipment, including sewing machines!)

    Ever wanted to make a 3D game cheaply on a low-to-medium end computer? Or a 2D game that utilizes the tools more commonly used in 3D engines, such as rigging? We believe that the key to doing that is empowering all of you to take on a more active role in helping our local game development scene grow and flourish. With that in mind, we want to invite everyone to attend our volunteer coordination meeting. Many of you have been asking how you can get more involved with our group efforts, and this meeting will be a great chance to do just that. We've done so many great things together, and there's no limit to what we can accomplish as long as we remain dedicated to improving. So, let's get organized!

  • CoG Ambassador Volunteer Orientation6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

    TVCOG Full and Super User members may earn credit toward payment of their next month's dues by serving as an Ambassador during open hours evenings and weekends. New Ambassadors must participate in a two-hour orientation program and work two shifts with an experienced Ambassador before being eligible to earn volunteer credit toward their membership dues as a solo Ambassador.   • Drop-In Kids Coding Night at THINQubator6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

    Drop-In Kids Coding Night at THINQubator Have a child interested in coding? Already working on his or her own projects? Just getting started with programming? Bring your child and a laptop to Drop-In Kids Coding Night on Thursday, February 1st from 6-8 pm and work with our volunteer programmers to take your projects to the next level. This unstructured event is open to children of all ages. Parents of participants under age 14 stay should plan to remain in the Center during the program, and all parents are welcome to learn alongside of their children or take advantage of free wi-fi in our lounge area. If you do not have your own computer, we have a few laptops available for use available on a first-come-first-serve basis. This will be a recurring event offered the 1st Thursday of every month. $5 drop in fee, or free to children of TVCoG members.

  • STEAM-Powered Saturday -- Constellation Projectors10:00 am - 1:00 pm

    Every 1st Saturday children ages 4-12 and their families are invited to join us for a fun, creative hands-on project. Brought to you through the generous support of the Albany Society of Engineers Foundations, these mind-expanding projects help children discover creative play through science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. This month's project is "Constellation Projectors." Build a mini projector to display constellations on your ceiling. This project is free, but donations are welcome.

  • MomUp! Raising Kids Who Code9:00 am - 11:00 am

    MomUp! is a fun, two hour interactive workshop for moms who want to help their kids navigate the world of programming, tech careers and pathways. Software is the interface through which so much of life happens: Communicating, planning, banking, research, shopping, healthcare, insurance, the DMV. If we raise our kids to be code-literate, we set them up for a future in which they can be makers, not just users, of software. Being code-literate opens doors for artists, musicians, social scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers - accountants, lawyers, doctors. Bring your laptop and get engaged with Albany Can Code to learn how to use free kid-friendly programming software, and empower yourself and your kids for this tech-saturated world we all live in. No computer experience necessary. If you do not have a laptop available for your use, please let us know, as we may be able to arrange for a loaner that will allow you to participate.   • Family Electronic Textiles Workshop1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

    In this project based workshop Youth-Adult pairs will learn together about electronic textiles (e-textiles) working with conductive thread, sewable batteries, LEDs, and microcontrollers to make a plush monster with a glowing heart to take home. Adult participants will also gain info on where to buy parts for future projects, and get links to lessons for other e-textiles projects. No previous sewing experience is necessary. The workshop is geared to kids 8 and above, but younger ages are welcome if the accompanying adult feels the child will be able to handle this level of activity.     The Zero To Maker series is a sequence of classes to introduce new members to key peices of equipment and training at the Center of Gravity. Members who need a refresher on the topic are also welcome to attend!

    This week's class will be an introduction to the 3D printers available at the COG. Focus will be on the Makerfront, mBot and Makerbot printers and the software used to prepare models for printing (called slicers).

      If you enjoy discussing games, come to the Tech Valley Game Space for Game Club! Every month, participants Game Club meeting pick a game to play, then get together and talk about their experiences! Think of this group as being a traditional book club, but with video games instead of your usual hard-covers and paperbacks. Participants discuss various aspects of the game that they liked, disliked, or simply found notable; everything from music, character design, and storytelling, to the in-game physics, level creation, or graphics quality. Anything and everything about the game can be talked about, and no matter one's viewpoint, their input will welcomed and listened to. Anyone can attend - no memberships necessary. So long as you've got the right equipment at home, and enough time and interest to play at least a little of the game, then you're welcome to join in! We will meet in the Community Room and begin the discussion after 7:30 pm.

    This week's class will be an introduction to the most commonly used wood shop tools available at the COG. The class is taught by Doug "Elvis" Williams, and will have some basic hands on experience to insure you're comfortable with the basics.Before coming to the class, please review this Red Tools Safety Video online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1KgaohH9Ec&feature=youtu.be This video will go over the basic safety procedures for the woodshop specifically, allowing you to focus on finer details during the Zero To Maker class.
