    The Zone Orientation Series is a sequence of classes designed to introduce new members to key pieces of equipment and training at the Center of Gravity. Members who need a refresher on the topic are also welcome to attend!

    This week's class will be an introduction to the fiber arts / crafts / galss cutting area available at the COG. Focus will be on the sewing machines, loom and embroidery machine, as well as crafting and glass cutting, and will be taught by Irene Purificato, the SRP for that zone.

This session of the VentureB Innovation Workshop will have participants explore applied aspects of estimating your market size through top down and bottom up techniques. During this program, participants will actively build a top down and bottom up example, walking away with a template for future use.   • Lift Off! Diversity Incubator Opening Ceremony1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

    Lift Off is a free, inclusive, six-week program for self-identified women and non-binary participants to make their first game; no coding or other game development experience needed! This diversity-focused workshop series invites selected applicants of varied backgrounds and interests to create their own game. Participants will learn and practice the skill sets involved in making a game, from design, art, coding, audio composition and more. The opening ceremony will begin with a talk from a professional in the gaming industry, as well as an introduction to all the mentors that will assist the participants.   • STEAM-Powered Saturday -- Circuit Creatures10:00 am - 1:00 pm

    Every 1st Saturday children ages 4-12 and their families are invited to join us for a fun, creative hands-on project. Brought to you through the generous support of the Albany Society of Engineers Foundations, these mind-expanding projects help children discover creative play through science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

    This month's project is Circuit Creatures: Use pipe cleaners, felt and feathers to create a creature with LED eyes. 

    This project is FREE, but donations are welcome. This is a drop-in program with no pre-registration required.

  • Laser Cutter 101: Make an Illuminated Acrylic Sign1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

    This class is geared towards beginning laser cutter makers or those looking for a refresher. Participants will learn safe laser cutter operation and the basics of designing for the laser cutter and will go home with a battery powered illuminated acrylic sign of their own design.

    Students are encouraged to bring simple art they would like to engrave/cut, but sample shapes and signs will be provided. The registration fee includes all materials (retail value approx. $20).

    This course also qualifies as the required Laser Cutter Safety Orientation.
    $50 CoG Members | $65 Non-Members

If you are planning on attending, please email admin@tvcog.net; registration is not required, but we would like to get a rough estimate of attendees. The $5 drop in fee is for use of TVCOG equipment; if you are planning on just coming in to discuss problems and are not using the equipment, the drop in fee is not required.

  • Intro to Glass Fusing Part 11:00 pm - 4:00 pm

    In this two-session class you will learn to use a kiln for fusing glass. We’ll make four pieces of jewelry, fully finished with clasp/chain, using three techniques – full fuse, contour fuse and kiln carving. While working you will learn:
    • Glass Cutting
    • Kiln Safety and Usage
    • Glass Grinding
    • Glass Drilling
    For Tech Valley Center of Gravity members, this class also serves as a safety orientation to the glass and enamel work zone. Taught by Irene Purificato.

  • Family Electronic Textiles Workshop1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

    Make a Plush Monster with Twinkling Eyes!

    In this project based workshop, Youth-Adult pairs will learn together about electronic textiles (e-textiles). They will work with conductive thread, sewable batteries, LEDs, and microcontrollers to make an adorable Plush monster with glowing eyes to take home. Adult participants will also gain information on where to buy parts for future projects, and get links to lessons for other e-textiles projects.

    This is a wonderful way to start a new hobby with a family member! No previous sewing experience is necessary. The workshop is geared to kids 8 and above, but younger ages are welcome if the accompanying adult feels the child will be able to handle this level of activity.

    The workshop registration fee of $55 per team includes some light refreshments and all materials.

    The Tech Valley Game Space (TVGS) Lesson Night is a free monthly lesson on skills useful for game development. These lessons are appropriate for participants of all ages and backgrounds.   • Introduction to Enameling6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

    Learn the fundamentals of enamels in this two and a half hour beginner class. The class will cover how to choose enamels and metals, prepare the metal, sift enamel, and fire. At the end of class, you’ll have a one of a kind piece to take home. Materials and use of tools included in the event fee. Taught by Kari Wood.

    $50 for CoG Members| $65 for Non-Members

  • Tech Valley Game Space Game Club7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

    If you enjoy discussing games, come to the Tech Valley Game Space for Game Club! Every month, participants Game Club meeting pick a game to play, then get together and talk about their experiences! Think of this group as being a traditional book club, but with video games instead of your usual hard-covers and paperbacks. Participants discuss various aspects of the game that they liked, disliked, or simply found notable; everything from music, character design, and storytelling, to the in-game physics, level creation, or graphics quality. Anything and everything about the game can be talked about, and no matter one's viewpoint, their input will welcomed and listened to. Anyone can attend - no memberships necessary. So long as you've got the right equipment at home, and enough time and interest to play at least a little of the game, then you're welcome to join in! We will meet in the Board Room and begin the discussion after 7:30 pm.

  • Woodshop 102: Make a Clock10:00 am - 1:00 pm


    This foundational class will teach you the basics of the woodshop! The class will introduce the simple machines available in the shop to create a beautiful clock. 

    This will include learning how to safely use the following: 
    Bandsaw
    Miter Saw
    Table Saw
    Belt/Disc Sander

    After a class you can walk away with your very own handmade clock! The registration fee includes all materials. For TVCoG members, this course also qualifies as the required Woodshop Safety Orientation.

  • Introduction to Quilting6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

    In this class, students will be introduced to the basic quilting techniques. Learn rotary cutting, piecing and basic seam pressing to assemble a quilt block that can be used as a pillow cover, wall hanging or the start of a full-size quilt.

    This class serves as an introduction to using the sewing machines available here at the CoG, as well as being an introductory course for quilt making. No previous sewing experience is necessary. We do have fabric available for your use, but supply is limited. Feel free to bring your own fabric to the class, in order to ensure that your final project is exactly as you would like it. All other materials will be provided. Taught by Irene Purificato
