Manufacturing Business Innovation Specialist  (posted July 14, 2017)

Tech Valley Center of Gravity – a makerspace and business incubator located in the Quackenbush Building in the heart of the vital urban innovation corridor of downtown Troy, New York – is nearing the launch of a prototyping and small-scale manufacturing facility in conjunction with its designation as a New York State certified 16V business incubator. The Manufacturing Business Innovation Specialist is responsible for growing the Incubator’s portfolio of small to mid-sized early stage physical-product producer clients and will work closely with those clients providing expertise and connecting them with resources needed to drive continued growth and innovation.  There is a great deal of flexibility and creativity necessary for this role both in how the role serves start-up and early stage companies, as well as in the types of programming and value-add resources that the incubator can provide to its clients.  The Manufacturing Business Innovation Specialist will work with Executive Director to manage the day-to-day operations of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity Manufacturing Incubator. He/she is responsible for overall strategy for the incubator program, client recruitment and management, and working with the executive director to promote and market incubator services to external audiences, as well as general administrative tasks, project management and program development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Lead design and management of the incubator program
  • Vet potential clients and on-board new clients
  • Provide consulting, coaching, mentoring and leadership support and coordinate business development services for clients and tenants
  • Provide ongoing client review and management
  • Develop and maintain pertinent recordkeeping system and provide relevant statistics to assist with reporting requirements
  • Consult with the director on overall facility operations and coordinate operation of the incubator and prototyping center
  • Conduct research to identify emerging needs and trends
  • Engage with capital region entrepreneurial ecosystem

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum of four years experience in manufacturing design and consultation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of relevant design software and systems
  • Experience working with startups in business plan/model development

Internal Relationships:

  • Supervised by Executive Director
  • Coordinates with Facilities Technical Specialist
  • Coordinates with Business Development Associate
  • Supervises Interns, Fellows and Volunteers

This is a .75 FTE, the scope of which may require occasional evening and weekend work and less frequent overnight travel. Qualified candidates must be able to lift and transport materials weighing up to 40 pounds.

Business Development Associate (posted July 14, 2017)

Tech Valley Center of Gravity is a makerspace and business incubator located in the Quackenbush Building in the heart of the vital urban innovation corridor of downtown Troy, NY. The business development associate will assist the executive director and manufacturing innovation specialist in the day-to-day operations of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity and its manufacturing incubator program, engaging with and assisting visitors, members and clients. This individual is the frontline at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity during his/her shift, so should be gregarious, patient, good-humored and sharp-witted.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Reception of visitors and conduct of facility tours
  • Scheduling and coordinating logistics for workshops, presentations and classes
  • Receiving and responding to general telephone and email inquiries, forwarding as necessary
  • Occasional subject research
  • Posting content to social media, record maintenance, journal entries, ordering supplies, calendar coordination and other administrative duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of three years of experience in office administration/clerical work
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent use of Business Phone Etiquette
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to speak before a small group during tours
  • Fluency in use of Microsoft Word and comfort in learning new software tools
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Willingness to use the above skills however needed to contribute to the overall success of the team

The ideal candidate will have experience in use of Google for Business tools, including Email, Contacts, Calendars and Drive, as well as some experience in maintaining database tools. However, we are willing to provide instruction in these areas to an otherwise highly desirable candidate.

This is a 20-hour-per-week position.
