We are always looking for members to join our volunteer team, and encourage everyone to reach out to staff to learn more about other volunteer opportunities that are not listed here, especially if you have a passion that you'd like to contribute.  

2025 Summer Micro Internship

A great way to enhance your resume or portfolio with hands-on projects! This unpaid internship exchanges 3 months of makerspace membership for 40 hours of volunteering on a makerspace improvement project. As you complete your volunteer task, you’ll enjoy all the privileges of Super Maker membership for your own personal use.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is 18 or older
  • Is working toward a degree or certification in engineering, machining, or other fabrication trade
  • Has an interest in doing hands-on projects, and has some experience and comfort level with tools (high school robotics, assembling drone or 3D printer kits, bicycle repair, etc). Don’t worry if you’re not experienced - this is an opportunity to practice and grow your skills.

Benefits:

3 months of Super Maker membership (May 15 - August 15, but can be adjusted based on academic schedule)

Requirements:

Complete at least 40 volunteering hours towards a makerspace improvement project:

    • Machine Shop Support - install additional compressed air lines, improve lathe workstation, or improve CNC plasma cutter workstation.
    • Weekend Greeter - Staff our front desk on Monday evenings (6pm-10pm) or Saturday mornings (9am-2pm). Answer public questions, provide tours, assist members as needed.
    • Coworking Improvement - Design & build a phonebooth for private video calls.
    • Host a Club - Share your interests with others! COG Clubs provide members with opportunities to connect, collaborate, and create together. These volunteer-led sessions cover a variety of topics based on member interests.

STEAM EDUCATION TEAM OPENINGS

Volunteer Opportunity: FIRST LEGO League Team Volunteer

ACTIVELY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

TVCOG is looking for volunteers to help support our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team! As a volunteer, you'll work alongside our two team Mentors, helping middle school students from KIPP Troy Prep explore coding, engineering, and teamwork through LEGO robotics. Sessions run on Fridays from 1-3pm, starting October 18th, 2024, and ending by March 2025. Open to ages 18+ or high school students ages 16+ who are currently in FIRST robotics programs.  A signed parental consent form must be provided by any volunteer currently in high school. Background checks required for all volunteers.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assist the Team: Help up to 10 students design, build, and program LEGO robots to tackle FLL challenges.
  • Support Learning: Assist with hands-on activities, making sure students understand key concepts in coding and teamwork.
  • Encourage Creativity: Create a positive environment where students can be creative, solve problems, and work together.
  • Prep for Competitions: Help the team get ready for regional FLL competitions.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Enthusiasm for STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, Math)!
  • Must be comfortable working with middle school students. Prior volunteer/teaching experience preferred.
  • Able to commit to the majority of the Friday sessions and competition dates.
  • Experience with robotics, coding, FLL competition teams or any FIRST programs.
